Nina Simone

I love Nina Simone.

I used to not love Nina Simone.

I was surfing youtube last night and came across a video for Feeling Good. The picture is what caught my attention-beautiful dark skin, framed with a stark white towel…cigarette held to her mouth…Then I listened. I don’t know the right words to describe her voice. She just sounded so real to me.

I tried listening to Nina Simone when I was younger. I couldn’t do it. She bored me.

I just wasn’t ready for Nina.

I want to avoid another post full of youtube clips, but I have to share this song. It grabbed me and hasn’t let go. It’s one of many I’ve listened to over the last 24 hours or so…but it’s one I keep repeating. (The lyrics are good…but you have to hear her voice for the full effect.)

Do what you gotta do
Come on back see me when you can
Man I can understand how it might be
Kinda hard to love a girl like me
I don’t blame you much for wanting to be free
I just wanted you to know
I’ve loved you better that your own kin did
From the very start it’s my own fault
What happens to my heart
You see I’ve always known you’d go

So you just do what you gotta do
My wild sweet love
Though it may mean that I’ll never kiss
Those sweet lips again
Pay that no mind
Find that dappled dream of yours
Come on back and see me when you can

Now I know it’ll make you feel sad
And make you feel so bad
They say you don’t treat me me like you should
They got ways to make you feels no good
I guess they got no way to know
I’ve had my eyes wide open from the start
And man you never lied to me
The part of you that they’ll never see
Is the part you’ve shown to me

So you just do what you gotta do
My wild sweet love
Though it may mean that I’ll never kiss
Those sweet lips again
Pay that no mind
Find that dappled dream of yours
Come on back and see me when you can

This one, too…

Ain’t got no home, ain’t got no shoes
Ain’t got no money, ain’t got no class
Ain’t got no skirts, ain’t got no sweater
Ain’t got no perfume, ain’t got no beer
Ain’t got no man

Ain’t got no mother, ain’t got no culture
Ain’t got no friends, ain’t got no schooling
Ain’t got no love, ain’t got no name
Ain’t got no ticket, ain’t got no token
Ain’t got no God

What about God?
Why am I alive anyway?
Yeah, what about God?
Nobody can take away

I got my hair, I got my head
I got my brains, I got my ears
I got my eyes, I got my nose
I got my mouth, I got my smile
I got my tongue, I got my chin
I got my neck, I got my boobs

I got my heart, I got my soul
I got my back, I got my sex
I got my arms, I got my hands
I got my fingers, Got my legs
I got my feet, I got my toes
I got my liver, Got my blood

I’ve got life , I’ve got my freedom
I’ve got the life

And I’m gonna keep it
I’ve got the life
And nobody’s gonna take it away
I’ve got the life
